Windows – Microsoft’s operating system – is the backbone of many businesses without which, many computer systems will cease to function correctly.
The latest version of Windows – Windows 10 – was released in July 2015 and has had multiple “updates” since that time however many law firms are still using older versions, such as Windows 7, which may pose numerous problems for your company.
What is happening to Windows 7?
On the 14th January 2020, Windows 7 will be going “end of life”, which means there will be no more updates and support for Microsoft 7 will end, potentially causing problems such as:
Issues With Your Software
There are many software options for law-firms: LEAP, Captorra, App4Legal, Clio, Bill4Time, and many more however most (if not all) of these companies will stop providing support for their software if your business uses Windows 7 (some already have).
This may result in glitches such as errors when recording billable time, painfully slow loading speeds and errors when migrating data to accountancy software such as Xero and SAGE, which may result in substantial tax bills at the end of the year.
Problems With Your Cyber Security
The security of your computer network often relies on updates to the operating system, issued by the likes of Microsoft. After 14th January 2020, the updates will cease leaving your business wide open to a cyber attack.
The Wannacry Virus, which crippled businesses across the world in 2017,
attacked computers across the globe and caused extensive problems for businesses of all shapes and sizes.
While Microsoft had released patches to secure computers against WannaCry, much of its spread was from organisations that had not applied these or were using older Windows systems that were past their end-of-life.
Consider the impact on your business if you suffered a cyber attack?
Could your business continue to operate without access to emails, files, databases, website, accounts, etc.?
