Pisys.net to the Rescue

Thursday, 19 July 2018
If you’ve ever spent hours working on a document only for your computer to crash resulting in all your work being lost; then you will know only too well the benefit of regularly saving your work.

Pisys.net to the Rescue

The same is true of your business and its IT systems.

If you don’t ‘backup’ your server on a regular basis, you run a very real risk of your business being in serious difficulty if there was a flood, fire, theft or a breach of your cybersecurity.

Historically, back-ups were ‘physical’ in-so-much that your server would be backed up to another device, this could be a second server, an external hard drive or some other form of storage.

This tended to happen overnight, so if there was a problem, you could restore the backup and continue as normal, only being a day behind.

Great in principle, but many businesses kept the backup in the same building as their primary server, so sometimes, a fire or flood would wipe out both!  Off-site backups became the norm to reduce the chance of this happening, but depending on the speed of your internet connection, accessing data on this ‘remote’ server could take hours, sometimes days to catch up when a server problem arose.

Thanks to Pisys.net and their partnership with leading software company Datto, there is now a viable alternative that has already saved one business a lot of time and money (more on that later).

Datto is, in simple terms, an external hard-drive that plugs into your server.  If something goes wrong, you can simply switch to it while the server is being repaired. The main benefit is that alongside a ‘hard-copy’ of your server, Datto also uploads an ‘image’, or copy, of your server to the cloud in regular intervals, sometimes as often as every 15 minutes.

How can this benefit your business?

Firstly, if there is a fire, flood, cyber-breach or other server problem, you can log-in to the cloud ‘image’ and carry on as normal.  Not only will you be working on a version of your server that is an hour or so old, there is no need to download data, you simply carry on as normal. What’s more, you can access up to 12 months of data instantly, so access to P&L figures, marketing metrics and historic customer data are all within reach.

While you’re working on the cloud-based server, Pisys.net will fix your normal server and once repaired, you switch back to the primary server and it's “business as usual” – problem solved with minor interruptions.

A case in point is an e-commerce customer of ours in Aberdeen.

Upon opening the business one morning, they quickly discovered there was a server outage. They were effectively locked out of their system and unable to work, due to a cyber attack.

A quick call to our helpdesk and Advanced Support Engineer, Matthew Stone was able to find a very quick fix.  The customer in question used Datto to backup the server, so Matthew was able to liaise with Datto Support and activate the ‘backup images’ to create a virtual, cloud-based server.

What may have taken hours to solve, was fixed in minutes and the customer was able to carry on as normal while the primary server was being fixed.  What’s more, all new work on the virtual servers was also backed up, so when the main server came back online, there was no loss of ‘new’ data.
